New Year’s Eve in Copenhagen: 1–4 Day Hour-by-Hour Itineraries

Copenhagen sees in the New Year on the streets with its own fireworks: the King’s New Year speech at 6 pm, then a long dinner and midnight on City Hall Square as the City Hall clock strikes.

Itineraries by length

Where to be at midnight

Copenhagen has no official fireworks show: everyone sets off their own and the whole city lights up at midnight. The midnight step is your choice; at both paces we suggest City Hall Square. We have dinner in the inner city and walk to the square.

  • City Hall Square: The traditional meeting place: the City Hall clock strikes midnight. Very crowded and loud; wear the firework goggles handed out free in shops and keep clear of anyone launching rockets.
  • Tivoli: Last year the fireworks were at 11 pm; the park closes at midnight and the square is two minutes away. The New Year concert is ticketed separately.
  • The harbour: Inderhavnsbroen: Calmer: the fireworks over Nyhavn and Christianshavn from the footbridge.
  • At your restaurant: If you’d rather skip the crowds and street fireworks, linger over dinner and watch midnight from the window.

Tips

  • Since 8 October 2026 Copenhagen Airport has run extra security screening, and on some days the queues reached an hour. Be there 2 hours before Schengen flights and 3 hours before non-Schengen flights; non-EU travellers should also allow time for the new Entry/Exit System (EES) registration at the border.

  • The metro runs 24/7; line M2 takes about 15 minutes from the airport to Kongens Nytorv. Buy tickets in the DOT Billetter app or at station machines; buses, metro and trains in the city share the same ticket.

  • Using several museums, a canal tour and public transport over 2–3 days? The Copenhagen Card can pay off; check what it covers before you buy. Copenhagen Card

  • Card is accepted almost everywhere and some places don’t take cash. The currency is the Danish krone (DKK), not the euro.

  • Bike lanes are separate from the pavement and very fast: don’t walk in them, and look out for cyclists before you cross.

  • In winter it gets dark at 3:30–4 pm, so we put outdoor stops around midday and museums in the morning and late afternoon. Danes sit down to dinner at 6–7 pm; book the popular places.

How we built these routes

There is no official show; Tivoli has fireworks at 11 pm. Tivoli’s Christmas lights stay up until 3 January. Our routes build 31 December around Nyhavn and Amalienborg in the morning (museums close at 2 pm) and a long rest in the afternoon, and keep 1 January for the National Museum, open on the holiday too, and Tivoli. There are two paces: relaxed and balanced–packed.

Enter your own dates and the route adapts to that day’s opening hours, markets and your flights.

Frequently asked questions

Are there fireworks in Copenhagen on New Year’s Eve?

There is no official show, but the whole city sets off its own fireworks at midnight; the busiest spot is City Hall Square. Last year Tivoli had fireworks at 11 pm. Since 2025 private fireworks have only been allowed from 31 December to 1 January.

Are the street fireworks dangerous?

In the crowded squares rockets are launched at close range. Wear the firework goggles (nytårsbriller) handed out free in shops and keep clear of anyone launching rockets; with children, choose the calmer harbour or your restaurant.

What’s open on 1 January?

Tivoli is open 11 am–11 pm, the National Museum 10 am–5 pm, Rosenborg 11 am–4 pm and Amalienborg 11 am–7 pm; Christiansborg and the Round Tower are closed, and the tower of Our Saviour’s Church is closed all January. Most cafés open in the afternoon.

When should I book New Year’s Eve dinner?

In October or November. Danes watch the King’s speech at 6 pm and then sit down to dinner; restaurants serve a set New Year menu (nytårsmenu). Pick one in the inner city, within walking distance of City Hall Square.

How early should I be at the airport?

Copenhagen Airport has run extra security screening since October 2026, and on some days the queues reached an hour. The airport advises arriving 2 hours before Schengen flights and 3 hours before non-Schengen flights.
